Volunteers needed for July 4 at VMI

We need volunteers to work the Democrats’ booth at the Fourth of July festival on the VMI parade grounds on Friday July 4.

The Republicans will be there, so we need to make our presence felt. We will have yard signs and bumper stickers from the Mark Warner campaign to distribute.

The booth will be up from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. We need two volunteers for each one-and-a-half hour shift, and also for set-up and take-down.

The shifts will be:

10-11:30

11:30-1

1-2:30,

2:30-4

4-5:30.

Jack Trammell for Congress

With all the attention being given to Eric Cantor’s defeat by Dave Brat in the 7th District Republican primary, it’s important to emphasize that Brat will have a Democratic opponent in November. His name is Jack Trammell, and like Brat, he is a professor at Randolph-Macon.

Cantor’s defeat gives Virginia Democrats a real opportunity. Brat has some rather extreme views (he ran to the right of the very conservative Cantor), and he is more vulnerable than Cantor would have been. So, especially since we have no Democratic challenger to Bob Goodlatte this year, we should devote some of our efforts to helping the Democratic candidate in our neighboring district.

On June 14 Jack addressed a meeting of the Hanover County Democratic Committee:

Rural Caucus Retreat: July 11-13 in Lynchburg

The reorganized Rural Caucus of the Virginia Democratic Party will hold a retreat Friday July 11 through Sunday July 13 at the Holiday Inn in downtown Lynchburg.

Rural localities constitute 90 percent of Virginia. The goal of the Rural Caucus is to address issues of importance, identify and help elect strong Democratic candidates, from the most local level all the way up to state-wide offices.

The retreat will feature courses designed for party leaders and grassroots activists, as well as for candidates and management/staff.

The cost is $90 or $75 for Young Democrats. Registration information is here. The deadline for registering is June 25.

If anyone is interested in joining a carpool from Lexington to Lynchburg (a little more than an hour each way), please contact Gene Zitver at gzitver@aol.com or phone 202-372-7303.
