Notice of City of Lexington Democratic Caucus

The Lexington Democratic Committee will hold an assembled caucus beginning at 7:30 p.m., on Monday April 18, 2016 in the meeting room of the Rockbridge Regional Library, 138 South Main Street, Lexington, for the purpose of electing two delegates to the 6th Congressional District Democratic Convention and the 2016 Virginia Democratic State Convention.

Any person wishing to seek election as a delegate or alternate must file with Gene Zitver at or 540-319-1649 no later than 5 p.m., Monday, April 11, 2016. A voluntary administrative fee of $10.00 (which may be waived) will be charged at the time of filing for those wishing to be elected members of the committee, a $5.00 fee for the 6th Congressional District Convention, and a $10 fee for the 2016 Virginia Democratic State Convention.

There is no charge for those wishing to attend and vote at the caucus.

Doors to the caucuses will open at 6:30 p.m. for check-in. Any person attending a caucus, before participating in that caucus, shall sign a standardized Caucus Participation Form stating that he or she is a Democrat, does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to a Democratic nominee in the ensuing general election, believes in the principles of the Democratic Party, and is a registered voter in the City of Lexington. Caucus Participation Forms must be filled out at the caucus prior to participating in the caucus. At 7:30 p.m. the doors to the caucuses will be closed and no person may complete a form and participate in the caucus after that time with the exception of those persons in line at 7:30 p.m.

If only one person files for each delegate position, the caucus will be cancelled. In this event the Chair will publicly announce the cancellation, proclaim the individuals properly filed as the duly nominated delegates, and so advise those individuals.

Delegate selection update

I want to bring you up to date on the process for selecting delegates from Lexington to the Sixth Congressional District Democratic Convention in Lexington on May 21 and the State Democratic Convention in Richmond on June 18, which will in turn select delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia in July.

Lexington has been allotted two delegates. Based on the results of the March 1 primary, one will be pledged to Hillary Clinton and one to Bernie Sanders. If you are interested in being selected as a delegate, you will need to pledge to support either Clinton or Sanders. If there is more than one person seeking to become a delegate for each Democratic candidate for president, we will hold an assembled caucus on Monday April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rockbridge Public Library in Lexington. Each participant in the caucus will choose whether to participate in the selection of either the Clinton delegate or the Sanders delegate– again, only if more than one person is seeking to become the delegate for each candidate.

All Democrats in Lexington are eligible to become a delegate or to participate in the April caucus (if required). If you are interested in being one of our delegates, pledged to either Clinton or Sanders, please let me know. The deadline in April 11.

The Sixth Congressional District Democratic Committee will hold a mock caucus and training session beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 19 at the Howard Johnson Inn, 2836 N Lee Hwy, Lexington. If you’d like to participate, please contact me so we can get an idea of how many will be attending.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
