Call for canvassing volunteers

A message from Christian Worth of the Lexington Democratic Committee:

When my family was fortunate enough to relocate to Lexington in 2016 from a thoroughly “red state”, one of the many benefits of becoming involved with Democratic efforts here was knowing that our votes really would matter. As disappointed as the outcome of the 2016 presidential election was, we can all be proud that Virginia stayed blue.

Now, all eyes are on our upcoming state-wide and even local elections as an indication of where we are headed as we make our way to the key races in 2018, 2020 and beyond.

I felt so energized after seeing the incredible turnout last Tuesday at the breakfast for Ralph Northam and hearing Ralph speak, that I was just floored when I saw the following tweet posted by the president over the weekend:

“The Democrats in the Southwest part of Virginia have been abandoned by their Party. Republican Ed Gillespie will never let you down!”

Let’s take this kind of jaw-dropping nonsense as a challenge to show the president and the nation what Democrats in Rockbridge County and Lexington are really capable of doing – and that is getting Democrats to show up and vote to support all our Democratic candidates on November 7th.

One of the most effective ways is door-to-door canvassing, where we send out volunteers in pairs to have one-on-one conversations about the different candidates, provide campaign materials, and to ask for a voter’s commitment to show up and vote on November 7th.

I am hopeful that each of you would be willing to donate at least three hours of your time to help the Rockbridge County and Lexington Area Democrats reach our goal of knocking on every door – we have only three weekends left and we really need every volunteer we can get, especially folks familiar with the county and willing to drive. And if you helped with canvassing last year, it would be wonderful to pair you with someone new to the experience.

In light of what the president is trying to do to demoralize us, it is all the more imperative that we reach out to those voters outside the city limits and let them know their vote counts and that the Democrats have not “abandoned” anyone. We will pair you up so no one is working alone and you will be provided with training, maps, and campaign materials. Better yet, bring a friend and come as as your own team.

Canvassing volunteers will need to report to Democratic Headquarters at 11 S. Jefferson (across from the Farmers Market parking lot) on the next three Saturdays for shifts that run from noon – 3p.m. and 3 p.m.-6 p.m. The training lasts approximately 15 minutes and will be offered at noon and 3 p.m.

We kept Virginia blue in 2016 and we can do it again with your help! And, let’s not forget that a Democratic sweep in Virginia will fire up Democrats across the country.

Please email me at or Michelle at to let us know when we can schedule you or if you have any questions. Thank you for all you have done already and I do hope we can count on seeing you on one or more of the next three Saturdays.
