Lexington/Rockbridge Voter Registration Plan

I want to follow up on our excellent Voter Registration Training Session on April 28 with an update and some opportunities to “hit the bricks” and start registering new voters for the 2018 elections and beyond.

— We are currently registering voters each Wednesday at the Farmers Market in Lexington across the street from Democratic Headquarters, 11 South Jefferson. One-hour or two-hour shifts are available from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Training is also available. If you can help, please contact Pam Grinder at

— We are registering voters every Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. outside of the Lexington Kroger, 422 East Nelson. We may expand this to other days depending on the response. To volunteer, please contact Daphne Raz at

— We have permission to do registration at the Lexington Police-Community Cookout on Wednesday June 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Richardson Park. If you want to participate, please contact me at

— We are exploring the possibilities for helping to register eligible students at Rockbridge County High School. (17-year-olds may register as long as they will be 18 on Election Day November 6.)

— The Washington and Lee College Democrats are planning a voter registration drive in the fall and we will provide any assistance they need.

— The Lexington Democratic Committee will sponsor booths on Sunday July 1 at the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Event at the Virginia Horse Center and on Saturday August 25 at the Rockbridge Community Festival in downtown Lexington.

There are a number of other recurring and upcoming events this spring, summer and fall where we may want to do voter registration:

— The Rockbridge Farmers Market, Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at the Virginia Horse Center.

— The Glasgow Farmers Market, Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, 10th St and Kanawha St.

— Friday’s Alive, Davidson Park in Lexington, June 1, June 22, June 29, July 13, July 27, 5:30-9 p.m.

— Fairfield Village Summer Celebration, all day Saturday June 16.

— Children’s Bike Parade, downtown Lexington, Wednesday July 4.

— Fairfield Heritage Day, Saturday September 1.

— Rockbridge Regional Fair and Expo, Virginia Horse Center, Thursday-Saturday September 6-8,

If you are interested in volunteering to do voter registration at one or more of these events, or at other events the you are aware of, please let me know.

Finally, the Democratic Coordinated Campaign will be providing us with names and addresses of households in Lexington and Rockbridge County where there are likely unregistered people who are eligible to vote. More information on this to come.

The deadline for registering to vote in the June 12 primary election is May 21. The deadline for registering to vote in the November 6 general election is October 15.
